Southland Corp. is selling 473 7-Eleven stores to its chief competitor and although more sales are in the works, company officials said they are not worried about losing the title as the world’s convenience store king. The Dallas-based retailer said it will sell stores in 10 states to Circle K Corp. for more than $147 million as part of the financing for the Thompson family’s leveraged buyout of Southland. The sale would shrink Southland’s 7-Eleven chain, which had 8,296 stores before the divestiture moves started last year, to 7,542.
