International Business Machines is expected to announce a new line of laptop personal computers in the next two months that could rejuvenate its role in the fastest-growing segment of the PC market, industry analysts say. The portable most likely will be based on Intel’s 80286 semiconductor and may quickly be followed by a more powerful model using the Intel 80386, the same chip that powers IBM’s top-of-the-line PS/2 personal computers. IBM already offers a laptop computer line, the Convertible Models II and III, but neither has made a strong dent in a market dominated by Japanese makers Toshiba and NEC.
