Richard D. Sanborn Jr. has been named president, chief operating officer and a director of Consolidated Rail Corp., Philadelphia. Sanborn succeeds Stuart M. Reed, who resigned in December. Conrail said the company will elect Sanborn to succeed L. Stanley Crane as chairman and chief executive, effective Jan. 1, 1989, after Crane retires. Sanborn, 51, is president of CSX Distribution Services Inc., a division of the railroad holding company CSX Corp.
