The World : Libyans Fly MIGs to Egypt

Share

Four Libyan air force jet fighters landed in Egypt in what appeared to be a major defection of key military personnel. Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak, indicating the Libyan officers sought political asylum, told reporters, “The country (Egypt) is their country and the matter is under study.” It was the third time in less than a year that Libyan aircraft had landed in Egyptian territory. The previous two incidents, both in March of last year, resulted in political asylum for at least five Libyans. Egypt’s Middle East News Agency quoted a government source as saying the four Soviet-built MIG-23 warplanes arrived in Egypt at an undisclosed airport.
