Share

The City Council has approved a conditional use permit allowing PacTel Cellular to install an 80-foot cellular telephone antenna at the Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall.

The permit also allows Los Angeles Cellular Telephones to use the antenna up to 55 feet.

PacTel will lease a 6-acre site from the city for $18,000 per year. The terms of Los Angeles Cellular’s lease with the city have not been negotiated.

Mayor Robert E. Ryan said installation of the antenna was a public safety measure for the hilly Palos Verdes Peninsula.

“A lot of these people with heart problems carry these phones in their cars,” he said. “They are scared to death when driving on this side of the hill because they can’t get reception.”

Although disturbed by the appearance of the antenna, Councilwoman Jacki Bacharach said, “I really feel it’s important to have for the citizens of this city.”
