CAMPAIGN ’88 : Bush Gains Delegates
Vice President George Bush picked up 24 delegates in New York this week by virtue of his opponents’ failure to file delegate slates in eight congressional districts.
The state Board of Elections removed three slates of delegates supporting Kansas Sen. Bob Dole from the April 19 primary ballot, and deleted one slate backing New York Rep. Jack Kemp.
The petitions were rejected mainly because they did not contain the required 1,250 signatures of registered Republicans, or were signed by Republicans living outside the congressional district the petitions were filed for.
Bush will have slates on the ballot in 33 of the state’s 34 congressional districts, while Kemp will field delegate slates in 12 districts, Dole in 11 and Pat Robertson in nine.
