Harmony Pledge Ends Minority Student Sit-In
A nine-day sit-in by minority students at Hampshire College ended Wednesday with the signing of an agreement designed to encourage racial harmony at the private school.
About 150 students watched as college President Adele Simmons and two other officials signed the document outside the dormitory office occupied by an estimated 40 protesters since Feb. 23.
The six-page settlement provides for a dean of multicultural affairs, an adviser for the group that occupied the Dakin House office and at least $4,500 in yearly funding for the group. The administration also agreed to take no disciplinary action against the students.
