The Wine Institute reported that soaring sales of U.S. wine to Japan and Britain helped send total wine exports in 1987 to 11.87 million gallons, a 64% increase over the previous year. The trade group said the dollar’s decline against foreign currencies, including a 55% drop against the Japanese yen over the past two years, was largely the cause. In addition, U.S. wineries have begun more aggressive promotional efforts to overseas markets, said Sam Folsom, a spokesman for the San Francisco-based industry organization.
