Women’s Basketball Roundup : Trojans Beat Stanford, 87-69

Cherie Nelson scored 41 points and had 13 rebounds as 15th-ranked USC remained tied for the Pacific 10 Conference lead by defeating No. 8 Stanford, 87-69, Saturday night at the USC Campus Gym.

USC (20-6 overall, 14-2) is tied with Washington, a 95-44 winner over Arizona Saturday, for the lead. Stanford (25-3, 13-3) falls to second place with its second straight defeat.

Holly Ford added 17 points for USC. Stacy Parson had 16 points for Stanford.

California 71, UCLA 68--Amanda Ray hit two free throws with five seconds left, and the Bears beat the Bruins at Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA (17-11, 10-6) trailed, 67-62, with 2:39 left, but got within 69-68 on a shot by Althea Ford with 43 seconds left but couldn’t overtake the Bears (15-13, 6-10).

Teresa Palmisano had 22 points for Cal, and Ray added 15 points and 10 rebounds. UCLA’s Dora Dome scored 15 points, and Ford had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

CS Long Beach 108, Hawaii 77--Angelique Lee scored 24 points, and the 10th-ranked 49ers won their 14th consecutive victory in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Long Beach.

Traci Waites had 16 points, and Penny Toler had 12 points and 9 assists for the 49ers (22-5, 18-0).

Judy Mosley had 28 points and 14 rebounds for Hawaii (13-13, 7-10).
