Lockheed Missiles & Space Co. and TRW submitted competing proposals to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for a powerful new orbiting telescope that will be able to see high-energy explosive events in the distant universe. The observatory, known as the Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility, is scheduled to be launched into orbit in the mid-1990s. Lockheed Missiles & Space, headquartered in Sunnyvale, is already building the Hubble Space Telescope, and TRW is building the Gama Ray Observatory. Selection of the winner is expected by August. The program value is put at several hundred million dollars.
