East Germany denied Western reports that more than 200 people wishing to leave the country have been detained, but West German radio later reported what it called a further crackdown on dissent. The broadcast said East German security forces tried to stop worshipers from gathering for a service in East Berlin’s Sophienkirche Church. The radio quoted witnesses as saying that about 100 would-be emigrants were among those who succeeded in taking part in the service. The East German denial of the detentions came from the official news agency ADN.
