Communist rebels shot to death six Philippine sailors and three civilians in an ambush, military officials said today.

The seamen were returning to the U.S. Subic Naval Base on Sunday when rebels opened fire on their jeep 2 1/2 miles from the base. Three civilians hitchhikers in the jeep were also killed.

On Saturday, about 100 rebels posing as government soldiers seized control of the coastal town of Abra de Ilog on Mindoro Island after overpowering police, the army said.
