Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : City to Require Signs on Dangers of Alcohol

Share

Liquor stores, bars, restaurants and other establishments that sell alcoholic beverages within the city soon will be required to post signs warning pregnant women of the dangers of consuming alcohol.

The City Council unanimously adopted the new ordinance Monday, making Santa Ana the first Orange County city to require warning signs wherever alcohol is sold. Los Angeles and San Diego counties and several cities, including Los Angeles, Long Beach and Santa Monica, already have adopted similar ordinances.

The ordinance was prompted by an Orange-based task force’s presentation in January on alcohol-related birth defects.

John Stuart, co-chairman of the group, said alcohol was the primary cause of retardation among infants in the U.S. and was the second-leading cause of birth defects.

The ordinance comes up for a final vote next month.
