“Supercarrier,” ABC-TV’s series version of “Top Gun,” is foundering. Its 90-minute premiere Sunday was broadsided in the ratings (it ran third in its time period) and the U.S. Navy has jumped ship, according to the Washington Post. “It got too wild,” a Navy spokesman was quoted as saying about the series, which focuses on the lives of officers and crewmen aboard a naval aircraft carrier. A brief statement from the service read: “After lengthy deliberations, the Navy determined that the scripts for ‘Supercarrier’ did not accurately portray the Navy and its people; therefore, cooperation was withdrawn.” Sources told the Post that Navy officials were disturbed by future plot summaries that had “Supercarrier” personnel involved in gun-running, military action in Central America and even a love story between the captain of the fictional USS Georgetown and a female jet pilot. Executive producer Steven de Souza did not return The Times’ calls about the series, which will air at 8 p.m. Sundays over the next seven weeks.
