The Japanese navy will send its largest contingent so far to a joint naval exercise with ships from the United States, Australia and Canada to be held in June near Hawaii, a Defense Agency spokesman said Thursday.

The flotilla of eight destroyers, one submarine, one supply ship and eight P-3C anti-submarine patrol planes from the Maritime Self-Defense Force will participate in the Rim of the Pacific Excercise (RIMPAC), held every two years, he said.

Japan has participated in the RIMPAC maneuvers since 1980. In 1986, the Japanese navy sent nine ships.
