Freshman Jay Edwards made 8 of 9 three-point shots and finished with 36 points to help Indiana defeat Minnesota, 91-85, Thursday night in a Big Ten game at Minneapolis.

It was the second-highest scoring total in the Big Ten this season, behind Michigan’s Glen Rice, who had 40 points against Minnesota Jan. 9.

Edwards, whose previous season high was 29, also set a conference season high with his eight three-pointers, topping the old mark of six held by four players, including Edwards.

Keith Smart of Indiana (18-9 overall, 10-7 in the Big Ten) finished with 16 points, making his first 9 free throws to give him 37 in a row, a school record. Smart broke his string when he missed the back end of a one-and-one with 1:24 left.

Dean Garrett added 31 points for Indiana, and Jim Shikenjanski had 26 for the Gophers (10-17, 4-13).

Iowa 103, Wisconsin 70--B.J. Armstrong scored 30 points as the 15th-ranked Hawkeyes defeated the Badgers in a Big Ten game at Iowa City.

Armstrong hit five of nine three-point shots in the first half as Iowa used aggressive rebounding and stingy defense to build a 56-34 halftime lead

Iowa (22-8, 12-5) moved into a second-place tie with Michigan. Wisconsin (11-16, 5-12) got 21 points from Danny Jones, who fouled out with 4:25 to play. Roy Marble had 20 points for Iowa.

Michigan State 55, Northwestern 53--Freshman Jesse Hall scored all 11 of his points in the second half to lead the Spartans (10-17, 5-12) over the Wildcats (7-20, 2-15) in a Big Ten game at East Lansing, Mich.

SEC

Mississippi 64, Alabama 59--Charles Prater broke a deadlock with one minute left in overtime, and Mike Paul and Ronnie Miller each hit two free throws after that as the Rebels beat the Tide in the opening game of the Southeastern Conference tournament at Baton Rogue, La.

The first-round victory sent the Rebels (13-15) into tonight’s quarterfinals against sixth-ranked Kentucky, the SEC’s regular-season champion.

Georgia, a 64-43 winner over Mississippi State, will meet Auburn tonight. Willie Anderson scored 22 points to lead the Bulldogs (17-14).

Reginald Boykin had 24 points for Mississippi State (14-15).

In the first game, Ole Miss fought back from a 52-43 deficit in the final 2:32 of regulation and had a chance to win, but Prater’s 18-footer bounced away with four seconds left, sending the game into overtime at 54-54.

Rod Barnes had 19 points for Ole Miss, and Alvin Lee scored 20 for Alabama (14-17).

ECAC METRO

Fairleigh Dickinson 90, Monmouth 75--Jaime Latney scored 30 of his tournament-record 39 points in a first-half scoring binge as the Knights downed Monmouth at Teaneck, N.J., for the ECAC Metro title and its second NCAA tournament bid.

The Knights (23-6), who also went to the NCAA tournament in 1985, won for the 18th time in 20 games.

The loss ended a surprisingly strong run for tiny Monmouth, which was playing in its first Division I postseason tournament since going big time in the 1983-84 season. However, the Hawks (16-13) were their own worst enemies in their first title game, missing the first seven shots while being out-rebounded, 13-0, in the opening minutes.

NORTH ATLANTIC

Boston U. 82, Hartford 73--Jeff Timberlake and Drederick Irving each scored 22 points to lead the Terriers (22-7) at Hartford, Conn., in a North Atlantic Conference tournament semifinal. They will play Niagara, a 62-59 winner over New Hampshire, Saturday in the championship game.

BIG EAST

Connecticut 75, Providence 62--Cliff Robinson scored 24 points and Phil Gamble added 23 as the Huskies defeated the Friars in the opening round of the Big East tournament at New York.

The Huskies (15-13), who finished last in the nine-team conference, will meet fifth-ranked and top-seeded Pittsburgh tonight in a quarterfinal game.

The loss ended the season for Providence (11-17), which went to the Final Four last year.
