Panicked soccer fans triggered the collapse of a sports stadium in Libya, killing at least 20 people, according to reports.

Newspapers in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, quoting a report from the Yugoslav state news agency Tanjug from Tripoli, said at least 20 people were killed and hundreds injured when a stadium dividing wall fell Thursday during a match between Malta and Libya.

But the Libyan news agency JANA said two spectators were killed. The JANA report, monitored in London, said some people had been treated and released and 16 were hospitalized.

The Times of Malta said panic occurred when someone in the stands brandished a weapon and the spectators rushed to get out.

Politika Ekspres, a Belgrade daily, said the incident began when several fans pulled out knives during a quarrel.

Malta’s state radio said two Libyans were arrested in Tripoli after the collapse.
