Arrests on Chapman Ave.

Share

Reactions to events often tell as much about us as the events themselves. Letters responding to the current campaign against Latinos in Orange include mental distinctions many of us automatically make.

When a person sees another person, what distinguishes that person as an alien, either legal or illegal? A letter writer questions whether “whites” are cited. Does he mean Caucasians? In ethnic questionnaires, Mexican is usually categorized with white.

I know of no one who objects to citations for public urination, defecation or harassment of passersby. Arrests (as opposed to citations) because a dark-skinned person is standing on a sidewalk in company of others constitutes selective enforcement. As he bears a Latino name, Mayor (Jess F.) Perez needs to be careful about where he appears in public.
