Uwe-Jens Mey of East Germany defeated Dan Jansen of the West Allis, Wis., in a World Cup 500-meter speed skating race at Inzell, West Germany. The win gave Mey the Cup title with 225 points, while Jansen had 221.

But Jansen won the World Cup title in the 1,000 meters with a point total of 124 over fellow-American Nick Thometz’s 123. East German Andre Hoffmann won the Cup title in the 1,500, and Sweden’s Tomas Gustafson won the 5,000 title.

At Skein, Norway, East German speed skater Karin Kania ended her career on a successful note, winning the women’s world championship.

Kania, who swept both the 500 and 3,000 meter races Saturday, won the 1,500 meters Sunday, then placed third in the 5,000 meters.
