A sniper was shot to death by British troops in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as the bodies of three Irish Republican Army guerrillas killed in Gibraltar were being taken north from the Irish Republic for burial in Belfast. A police spokesman said that the sniper, identified as a member of the outlawed IRA, had attacked a British patrol. Belfast has been racked by rioting since British commandos killed the three guerrillas on an abortive bombing mission for the IRA in Gibraltar on March 6. About 2,000 IRA sympathizers came to Dublin airport to welcome the three coffins, draped with the Irish tricolor, when they arrived by chartered plane from Gibraltar.
