Police in India arrested more than 25,000 people, officials said, as authorities moved to block a nationwide strike today to protest what opposition forces contend is government corruption and incompetence. The nine opposition parties sponsoring the strike have also accused the government of failure to contain Sikh separatist violence in Punjab. State governments across India deployed additional security forces, according to the United News of India, to guard important installations and to maintain law and order.
