Police acting on orders from President Samuel K. Doe stormed Liberia’s Finance Ministry building in Monrovia and forcibly evacuated more than 100 employees, government sources said. The action, part of Doe’s anti-corruption drive, involved the data processing and general accounts bureaus, the sources said. An investigation into a $300,000 fraud case has reportedly resulted in the sacking of up to 15 staff members. Last month, Doe fired his finance minister. For two months, a team of U.S. financial experts has been in Liberia on a lengthy project to monitor the African nation’s finances, plagued by graft and mismanagement.
