Future Site of Carnation Headquarters : City Will Force Sale of Property

The Glendale redevelopment Agency will begin eminent domain proceedings this week to buy a prime piece of real estate in the redevelopment zone of Brand Boulevard.

The property at 800 N. Brand Blvd., a block north of the Ventura Freeway, is to become the corporate headquarters of the Carnation Co.

The Sierra Land Group of Glendale, which owns the largest tract at the site, rejected an offer for purchase from the city, prompting officials to exercise the right of eminent domain, Redevelopment Director Susan Schick said.

The city will file the action in Los Angeles Superior Court this week, officials said. The court would then order a sale price within 90 days, Schick said.

Last month, the Glendale City Council approved an agreement to sell the site to Texas-based Lincoln Properties, a leading national developer that will build a 20-story tower with 525,000 square feet of office space.

The project will provide more than 2,000 new jobs and is scheduled to begin in September, Schick said.
