Italian President Francesco Cossiga asked Christian Democrat leader Ciriaco De Mita to try to form a new government--Italy’s 48th since World War II. Cossiga called in De Mita, 60, after three days of talks with political leaders on the crisis caused by last week’s resignation of Christian Democrat Prime Minister Giovanni Goria. Presidential officials said De Mita accepted under a formula allowing him to give up if he is unable to form a viable government.
