A Utah agency cited Morton Thiokol Inc. for six safety violations and fined the aerospace company $31,700 in a fire in an MX missile motor assembly building Dec. 29, 1987, that killed five workers. The victims’ presence in the building and failure to use remote-control equipment instead at the time of the fire were among the most serious violations alleged by the Utah Division of Occupational Safety and Health. The penalties represent the maximum that could be imposed, officials said. Morton Thiokol has 30 days to appeal.
