State Mollusk
I don’t know what the state mollusk should be (“Bill Pushes Banana Slug as State’s Official Mollusk,” Part I, March 9), but I do know what the state joke is--the state Legislature.
Legislators have time to consider a state mollusk, but not time to bring California tax laws into line with federal tax laws. They lack political courage to pass the laws that they should, leaving it to the people to do the job via the imperfect initiative process. They try to pass bond bills that would use bond money for school operating expenses--saddling our children with unsupportable debt. They exhibit an arrogant indifference to the needs of the people. No, there certainly can be no debate about the title of state joke.
