Iran said it captured the Iraqi border town of Halabja and accused Baghdad of killing many of its own civilians with chemical bombs in an effort to halt the Iranian advance. Tehran said its Revolutionary Guards killed or wounded 8,000 Iraqi troops and captured 3,400--including the major general commanding the 43rd Division--in the drive for Halabja. Baghdad has denied reports of fighting in the northeastern Kurdish province of Sulaymaniyah, saying it had withdrawn from the area “some time ago.” Meanwhile, Iraq fired another missile into Tehran as the “war of the cities” continued.
