Gen. Bruce Clarke, Army Commander, Dies

Bruce C. Clarke, a retired four-star general who was the Army commander-in-chief in Europe when Berlin was the focal point of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, died Thursday. He was 86.

During World War II, he headed Combat Command A in the 4th Armored Division and later commanded the entire division. During the Korean War, he commanded the U.S. I Corps and later the X Corps of the Far East Command. Later, he commanded the U.S. Army in the Pacific, the U.S. 7th Army in Europe and the Continental Army Command at Ft. Monroe, Va. He was commander-in-chief of the Army in Europe from 1960 to 1962.
