Up to 28 people were killed in Rangoon last week in the worst riots in Burma since 1974, according to unconfirmed reports reaching Bangkok, Thailand. The reports said that troops armed with guns and clubs stormed into Rangoon on Thursday to disperse thousands of students protesting at several campuses. Hundreds of demonstrators were jailed and about 50 were injured, diplomats in Bangkok said. The unrest began with a brawl between students and local youths March 12 but later turned into widespread anti-government rioting, with students and residents taking part.
