Scaled-Down ‘Star Wars’

A photo of “Star Wars” mastermind nuclear physicist Dr. Edward Teller applauding President Reagan’s latest SDI speech appeared on the front page on March 15. The President seeks approval for $4.5 billion to fund SDI in 1989, and he is trying to draw attention to congressional opposition.
The article noted that some scientists question whether “Star Wars” goals are feasible.
My reading indicates that the majority of scientists question SDI feasibility and that many have gone on record to this effect (e.g., American Physical Society). In addition it has been reported that Teller knowingly based the SDI idea (which Reagan used in his 1983 speech) on exaggerated technological claims.
SDI is to be an impenetrable shield that will provide complete protection for Americans against nuclear missile bombs, but opponents and proponents of SDI both agree that the shield cannot be 100% effective.
No wonder there is opposition to the “Star Wars” program--it surely seems justified to me.
