CAMPAIGN ’88 : Robertson Cancels Talk
Republican presidential candidate Pat Robertson canceled a Monday night appearance in Riverside, Calif., to go to Dallas ahead of schedule for unstated reasons, a campaign spokeswoman said.
Robertson attended a late-morning private forum sponsored by Atlantic Richfield Corp. in Los Angeles and was to have attended the Full Gospel Businessman’s Fellowship Dinner at the Rain Cross Square Convention Center in Riverside.
Robertson was well-received Saturday in an appearance before the California Republican Assembly, the largest and most conservative of the state’s grass-roots Republican organizations.
However, Vice President George Bush easily won the CRA endorsement on a 231-81 vote when other contenders, Kansas Sen. Bob Dole and New York Rep. Jack Kemp, were dropped from the endorsement ballot.
Robertson said he’s staying in the race as a rallying point for conservatives and laying groundwork for future races, but he all but conceded Sunday that Bush has the Republican nomination locked up.
