KPBS-FM (89.5), the local affiliate of the National Public Radio (NPR) network, has teamed up with Gosteleradio, the official broadcast service of the Soviet Union, for a series of monthly live radio shows.

The hourlong “Calling Moscow” program will debut Friday at 3 p.m. The show will be carried by KPBS and various other NPR stations around the country, as well as by the Soviet international shortwave service.

“Calling Moscow” will give Americans the chance to chat with Soviet guests over the telephone. Topics will include education, child care, retirement, theater, environmental and wildlife concerns, cooking and gardening.

“The object of the program is not to stir up debate but to open channels for dialogue,” KPBS station manager Tom McManus said.
