Kudelka Piece, ‘Petrushka’ on Joffrey Slate

A new ballet by Canadian choreographer James Kudelka and a revival of Mikhail Fokine’s classic “Petrushka” highlight the three-week engagement by the Joffrey Ballet, May 3-22 in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. This reportedly will be the only local repertory season by the company in 1988.

Commissioned by the 1988 Olympic Arts Festival in Calgary, Kudelka’s “Concerto Grosso” is set to music by Jean Papineau-Couture. It is one of three Kudelka ballets in the Joffrey repertory. Originally supervised by the late Leonide Massine, the Joffrey Ballet staging of “Petrushka” was last danced locally in 1983.

The 1988 repertory season is the Joffrey’s fifth as resident dance company of the Music Center. Announced programming is as follows:
