Survey: Family Savings Up 14.9% in Japan
Associated Press
TOKYO —
The average Japanese household in a recent survey had $82,000 in savings at the end of last year, up 14.9% from a year earlier, a government report published Wednesday said.
It was the biggest annual increase in savings since 1979, when average savings rose 15.5% from 1978, said Namiko Mizutani, a statistician at the Management and Coordination Agency, which conducted the survey.
Mizutani said the increase resulted largely from an increase in stock prices last year.
