A former immigration counselor pleaded guilty in federal court in Los Angeles to charges that he used sham marriages to help a Mexican couple apply for legal residency.
Manuel Garcia Jr., 37, of Tustin, admitted helping the couple apply for residency in 1985 and 1986 by accepting documents that said they were each married to U.S. citizens, Assistant U.S. Atty. Leslie Swain said.
Garcia faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine when he is sentenced May 9 by U.S. District Judge Terry Hatter Jr.
