A Soviet official working at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters was recalled to Moscow after French secret services discovered he was a spy, Western security sources said today.

They said Vladimir Aksyonov, a middle-ranking employee in the European sector of the U.N. agency’s external affairs division, has returned to the Soviet Union. He had worked in Paris since 1985, they added. The sources declined to give details of Aksyonov’s alleged espionage activities, but French sources said the international civil servant had been gathering information about foreign diplomats working in the French capital.
