Rolls-Royce PLC’s profit climbed 12% to $247 million for 1987, the year the airplane engine maker was privatized by the British government. Sales totaled $3.8 billion, up 14%. The London firm, which is separate from the luxury car maker, attributed the results to strong gains in the civil aviation division, which more than offset a sharp rise in research and development costs.
