ICN Pharmaceuticals Inc. said it has sold the 8.6% stake in Swiss drug-industry giant F. Hoffmann-La Roche & Co. it accumulated since September, abandoning hopes of merging the companies. Proceeds from the sale will be used to buy one or more health-care companies to expand ICN’s distribution capabilities, the Costa Mesa-based company said. In another matter, Amy Brown, a spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department, confirmed reports that the agency was looking into “unspecificed concerns” raised by the Food and Drug Administration involving ICN. She would not comment on the contents of a NBC News report earlier in the week saying that the Justice Department was asked to impanel a federal grand jury to investigate ICN officials.
