BOGOTA, Colombia —
President Virgilio Barco ordered an immediate evacuation today of residents near the killer volcano Nevado de Ruiz, citing spewing gas and ashes.
“The situation is dangerous,” said Eduardo Parra, director of the Vulcanological Institute in the city of Manizales. The evacuation order affected about 600 people living in a high-risk zone within 6 miles of the volcano, authorities said. The volcano erupted Nov. 13, 1985, burying the town of Armero and killing at least 25,000 people.
