A Taiwan court freed two reporters from charges of illegally visiting China on a reporting assignment, saying that “according to existing laws, no punishment should be imposed.” Taiwan government regulations have banned such trips since 1949 but stipulated no specific punishment. Unless reversed on appeal, the ruling apparently clears the way for Taiwan journalists to visit the mainland. Wu Feng-shan and Lee Yung-teh of the Independence Evening Post visited China last September without the approval of the Taiwan government. They were welcomed in China, and their articles were published in Taiwan.
