English Fluency in Garden Grove Schools

Re “Garden Grove Trustees Answer Foes” (March 9): As a Westminster resident, I was present at the controversial board meeting of the Garden Grove Unified School District held last month. I believe that the intent of those who opposed the board’s actions at that meeting has been seriously misrepresented.

I hope to clarify this issue by restating a suggestion made by one of the community members present that night to solve both the overcrowding issue and the concern of English fluency as other school districts in Southern California have done with great success; namely, to make available a school which would serve the purpose of strengthening or teaching English language skills before the students are absorbed into the various existing schools.

The result, it was stated, would allow for both the resident children of the schools and the currently non-English speaking or English-as-second-language students all to benefit from a continued high-quality level of education, as the language problem would be resolved before the children were brought together to be taught as one unit.

This strongly supported suggestion made it extremely clear to me that special interests were not the issue, but rather a sincere concern for a high quality of education for all the children who would be involved.
