ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A bomb planted in a jeep killed at least four Soviet citizens in Kabul, and an Afghan Politburo member narrowly escaped assassination when a bomb blew up a bridge, Western diplomatic sources said today.
The Politburo member was wounded and two of his bodyguards died, the diplomats said.
In Moscow, a Soviet spokesman denied that Soviet citizens had been killed in the attack Sunday.
“This is not true. Nothing of this kind has happened,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Gennady I. Gerasimov said. The spokesman said he had talked with the Soviet ambassador in Kabul.
Diplomats said the bomb blew up a jeep and killed at least four Russians. It also gutted a shop, blew over a tree and hurled debris several hundred yards.
