The Nation : Chicago Agrees to $9 Million in Back Pay
The city of Chicago has agreed to establish an interest-bearing back-pay fund of $9.2 million to settle a discrimination case involving 729 women, blacks and Latinos on the Chicago police force, the Justice Department announced. The proposed consent decree, filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, also would adjust seniority dates for those victims. The decree would resolve a suit filed in 1973 alleging discrimination by Chicago in police department hiring and promotion. A federal judge in January, 1976, found the city in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
