Britain’s Defense Ministry rejected a parliamentary request for an investigation into the apparent suicide of the eighth scientist involved in defense work to die since 1986. Member of Parliament Doug Hoyle had called for the probe, asking, “Is it simply overwork or something more sinister?” His request came after Trevor Knight, an engineer at Marconi Defense Systems Ltd., a contractor for President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, was found dead in his car in his garage Friday. Police reported that a hose ran from the exhaust pipe into the closed car, indicating suicide, but said that no suicide note was found, nor were there reports that Knight had been depressed.
