More than 80% of Americans favor a federal program to provide long-term home care for the chronically ill and disabled, according to a poll by Louis Harris & Associates. The survey also found that more than 70% would support paying for the program by increasing Medicare payroll taxes for people who make more than $45,000 a year. Rep. Claude Pepper (D-Fla.) released the survey in conjunction with a House aging subcommittee hearing on his five-year, $25-billion proposal for long-term home care.
