A former U.S. Marine who allegedly led a coup attempt earlier this month against Liberian President Samuel K. Doe has killed himself, the government said, and 13 other people have been charged with treason. Government spokesman Emmanuel Bowier said Joseph Robert Kaipaye committed suicide in view of police, but he declined to give details. Unconfirmed reports said Kaipaye jumped from a 6th-floor window of the executive mansion. Among those arrested in the alleged plot was Gabriel Kpolleh, leader of the banned opposition Liberia Unification Party.
