Local News in Brief : Airport Noise Foes Lose

Share

A federal judge has ruled that a homeowner organization opposed to additional flights at the Long Beach Municipal Airport has no standing in his courtroom because the group’s bylaws state that it will have no members.

U.S. District Judge Laughlin Waters, citing the provision in the bylaws and raising questions about the proper name of the group, reversed his earlier decision to let L.B. HUSH present witnesses at the trial of a lawsuit brought by 13 major airlines seeking additional flights at the noise-plagued airport. The trial began March 8.

Long Beach City Councilman Edd Tuttle said that the wording of the bylaws was a legal technicality and that the group actually represents about 6,000 residents on its mailing list. An attorney for L.B. HUSH, which stands for Long Beach Homes Under Stress and Hazard, said he will appeal Waters’ decision.
