“Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “L.A. Law” and specials from local stations KNBC and KCET were among the 27 recipients of broadcasting’s Peabody Awards, announced Monday. KNBC Channel 4 won for its special report, “Some Place Like Home,” about hospice care for AIDS patients; and KCET Channel 28 for “Nova: Spy Machines,” about the evolution of spy satellites, co-produced with WGBH-TV in Boston. “L.A. Law” was honored for being a show with “intelligent scripts, crisp direction and fine acting.” “Star Trek” was cited for its episode, “The Big Goodby,” as “thought-provoking entertainment,” which indicated a new “commitment to quality” in first-run syndication. “I don’t think any show in its first season has won a Peabody,” producer Gene Roddenberry told The Times in an interview. “Certainly not in syndication.” The awards will be formally presented in New York on May 4.
