Lakers Take Court for Drug Message

Share

The cheering for the Los Angeles Lakers at the Forum was more high pitched than usual Monday, but no less enthusiastic.

It came from 8,500 Inglewood schoolchildren, who joined Laker players and officials for an anti-drug rally organized by the “Laker Wives” in cooperation with city and school officials. The Laker organization’s continuing anti-drug campaign has included fund-raising efforts for Inglewood D.A.R.E., a drug education program taught by city police officers to sixth-graders.

Along with the master of ceremonies, radio disc jockey Rick Dees, the world champions and Coach Pat Riley delivered short speeches, then performed their anti-drug rap video, “Just Say No.” That finale had students dancing in the aisles as the Lakers danced on stage with their families.

The Laker Wives also announced their newest project, a video entitled “The Winning Choice,” in which Laker players discuss the perils of drug abuse with students. The video will be distributed to schools across the nation free of charge.
