U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy traded insults with a British soldier who searched his car today during a fact-finding tour of predominantly Roman Catholic West Belfast.

“Since when do you tell anybody what to do?” Kennedy, eldest son of assassinated Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, told a soldier at a Belfast checkpoint.

The soldier then told the Massachusetts Democrat to go back home.

“You go back to yours,” Kennedy replied as reporters looked on.

Kennedy’s visit, which includes planned talks with Catholic and Protestant politicians, was arranged before last month’s upsurge in violence in the British-ruled province.
